The fifteenth Women's National Cross-Country Championships took place at Cowley Marsh, Oxford. The event had been postponed twice due to weather conditions.

Pat Sandall (Birchfield Harriers) was not defending the individual title, making Miss Ruby Wright (St. Gregory's AC) the one to watch. Birchfield Harriers, who were defending their team title, were confidently expecting to register another win.

At the half-distance Joyce Heath (Small Heath Harriers) led the race, with Miss Ruby Wright up with the leaders. About a quarter of mile from the finish 27-year-old Wright put on a burst of speed and went on to win by nine seconds, her time was 00:21:13. Runner up was Heath with Miss M. Harper (Birchfield Harriers) in third place.

In the team event Birchfield Harriers easily retained the scoring only 17 points, with Small Heath Harriers their nearest rivals (41 points) second, four points ahead of Sheffield United Harriers. Counters for Birchfield Harriers were Joyce Heath (2nd), I V Kibbler (4th), D Balder (5th) and M E Bartleet (6th).
