The playing fields of Hagley Park School in Rugeley, Staffordshire were hosts to the Intermediate Women's National Cross-Country Championships. Local club Cannock Chase AC helped facilitate the event that had attracted over 2500 entries of which 404 were for the intermediate women's race. The two-lap course included four steep hills and two streams. The event was sponsored by ICL.


Amanda Alford (Stevenage & North Herts AC) was first to show followed by Linda King (Basingstoke AC), King took the lead with half a mile to go and went on to win by 8 seconds in 16:35. Marion Witts (Essex Ladies AC) was runner up with Susan Walker (Sale Harriers) third.


The team race was won by Sale Harriers for the third year running, Sale beat Coventry Godiva Harriers by 23 points with Leeds City AC third.
