The thirty-ninth edition of the Youth's English National Cross-Country Championships took place at Newark and Notts Agricultural Showground, and this was the first time Newark and in fact the first time Nottinghamshire had hosted the race. Provincial Insurance Company were once again the sponsors and the course consisted of one loop and one lap and was 4 miles in length.

At the end of the first loop the leading group consisted of Steve Halliday (Halifax Harriers), Simon Holiday (Liverpool Harriers), Rupert Ridge (Southend Harriers), Darren Cooney (Skyrac AC) and Southern champion Darrell Smith (Tonbridge AC).

At the halfway point Smith, Findlow and Northern champion John Nuttall (Preston Harriers) had broken away from Paul Riley (Liverpool Pembroke Harriers), Holiday, Simon Powell (Woking AC), Phil Helm (Liverpool Pembroke Harriers), Ridge and Steve Cowley (Westbury Harriers). With a mile to go the leading trio had extended their lead with Findlow steadily building an advantage that he held to the finish. Smith held on to second with Nuttall third.

Findlow told Barry Smyth at Athletics Weekly: "I felt fine throughout the race. I decided to settle down slowly and work my way through".

Tonbridge AC scored four in 24 for an emphatic win in the team race with Northern champions Liverpool Pembroke Harriers second. Third place went to Aldershot, Farnham & District AC. Darrell Smith added team gold to his individual silver as he led Tonbridge home, other counters were Andrew Hollens (15th), Daren Neale (21st) and Spencer Newport (24th).
