The newly instituted English National Youth Cross-Country Championship took place at Newbold Comyn Farm, Leamington Spa prior to the senior men's race. Clubs were allowed to enter twelve runners with eight to run and four to score. G B Saunders (Derby & County AC), a Repton schoolboy, won comfortably over 3 miles in 18:27, 28 seconds clear of runner-up D L Birch (Leeds Harehill Harriers). Derek Walker of Sheffield United Harriers was third.

Team honours went to Leeds Harehill Harriers, counters being the aforementioned D L Birch (2nd), J D Banton (10th), R R Horsfall (23rd) and B Bottomley (30th). Leeds totalled 65 points, 12 clear of Thames Valley Harriers with Belgrave Harriers two points further back in third.
