Sheffield, Yorkshire on Saturday 11/01/1947 (Junior Ladies)
The eleventh Junior Women's National Cross-Country Championship took place in Sheffield. Walsall LAC were delayed on the road, and Dudley Harriers found themselves one short, so their three ran as individuals. Spartan LAC, the only team from the South, arrived showing signs of the long train journey. The race was started by the Lord Mayor and Mayoress of Sheffield and ten teams, with a total of fifty runners started. First home in an excellent race was June Marshall (Sheffield United Harriers). She was followed by the Midland rivals Ivy Kibbler (Birchfield Harriers) and Nellie Batson (Small Heath Harriers), the last-named, who was suffering from a bad cold, doing valiantly to pick up several positions in the closing stages. Birmingham Atalanta won the team race with 29 points, 5 less than runners-up Sheffield United Harriers with Small Heath Harriers in third.
