The first Junior National Cross-Country Championship race took place over two laps totalling six miles in Graves Park, Sheffield. Athletes over 18 and under 21 on the day of the race were eligible to run.
Ivor Hawkins (Westbury Harriers) dashed to the front of the field on the fall of the flag and set a pace which suggested a mile race rather than six miles of tough undulating country. Just before the half-way stage Hawkins was overtaken by the ultimate winner, M W Atkinson (Kettering Town Harriers) who had displayed sound judgment in holding back a bit at first. In the final 100 yards D E Birch (Leeds Harehills Harriers) challenged Hawkins and took second place by a yard.
