Caversham Park, Reading was the scene for the eighth Youth's English Cross-Country Championships. The 3½-mile grass land course consisted of one small lap and one large lap.
M. Reeve (Southend-on-Sea AC) trailed Midland champion R. Allen (Coventry Godiva Harriers) with 100 yards of the race remaining, Reeve outsprinted Allen to win by 2 seconds in 19:15. Third place went to B G Lucas (Ilford AC).
Sheffield United Harriers, with 4 in 40, were great winners of the team race by 53 points from Coventry Godiva Harriers. Bronze medals went to Sutton Harriers.
