The twenty-second Women's National cross-country championships were held at Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire. The two-lap course was 3 miles in length and was flat.

Miss Diane Leather (Birchfield Harriers) went into the lead immediately after the start and by the end of the first lap she had established a good lead over Ann Oliver, the Northern cross-country champion. Dilys Williams (Birchfield Harriers) was in third place. There was no change of positions in the final circuit and Miss Leather won in 19:16, 44 seconds clear of Oliver.

Miss Leather also led the Birchfield Harriers to victory in the team race, it was Birchfield's 11th success in the 22 races decided to date. Birchfield also had to thank Miss Williams for her early placings as the club had to await the arrival of the 24th girl for the final scorer, London Olympiades AC, the runners up, had four in the first twenty. Birchfield scored 40 points and London Olympiades 62, third place went to Selsonia Ladies AC with 69.
