Arrowe Park in Birkenhead hosted the ninth Youth's English Cross-Country Championships. The grassland course was one large lap covering 3 miles.

Alan Cocking (Bramley & District Harriers) went out in front and set up a good lead. Ben Grubb (Sheffield United Harriers) who beat Cocking in the Northern Championship made a great effort about a quarter of a mile from the finish and drew up to Cocking's shoulder, but then appeared to have shot his bolt, and the stronger Bramley lad came home a very comfortable looking winner. David Welch (Harrogate Harriers) was third edging L Reed (South London Harriers) out of the medals.

Team honours went to South London Harriers with four in fifty-four to beat Macclesfield Harriers by some distance. Thames Valley Harriers finished in third place.
