The twelfth Youth's English Cross-Country Championship took place at Parliament Hill Fields in London. Heavy rain on the day before the championships made the undulating course a mud bath. On the run in to the steep uphill finish midland champion A Hodgetts (Stourbridge, Wordsley & District Harriers) and southern winner G Howard led the field. Hodgetts led by several yards at the bottom of the hill but was overtaken a few yards from the finish by Howard who was encouraged by Hodgetts who keep looking over his shoulder. The margin of victory was but a few inches with Hodgetts falling over the line. Third place went to M Herriott (Sparkhill Harriers).
