The fourteenth Youth's English Cross-Country Championship took place at the Hotpoint Recreation Club Ground, Fletton, Peterborough. The 3-mile one lap course was fast and flat and consisted of grassland and plough.
Robin Rowland (Bedford & County AC) looked to have the race won as he led in the home straight but when told there was 100 yards to go Rowland sprinted but ran out steam with the finish line still some way off. Ken Smith (Deptford Park AC) finished strongly to win from John May (Horsham Blue Star Harriers). Smith had stayed well back early in the race and only in the last half-mile did he move up with a strong burst of speed to take the lead. Smith's winning time was 16 min. 42 sec., two seconds ahead of May, with Rowland third.
