The thirteenth Junior English Cross-Country Championships took place at Dartmouth Park, West Bromwich. The rain had made the going tough in some areas of the 6-mile two lap course. The event was sponsored by the News of the World.
The lead changed hands many times during the race with Geoff North (Blackpool & Fylde Harriers) and Midland champion Tony Walker (North Staffordshire & Stone H & AC) always to the fore. In the latter stages of the race Walker broke away to win in 32:30, forty yards clear of runner-up Jim Kenmore (Ballydrain Harriers & AC) with Geoff North third.
