The twenty-fifth Junior Women's National Cross-Country Championship took place on Wimbledon Common. The 2½ mile course consisted of a straight run of about a mile, with about half-mile diversion which was more varied and consisted of a downhill, around a lake, and up the hill and so back on to the long finish straight. Muriel Rees (London Olympiades AC), Jackie Barnet (Newport AC), Alison Leggett (Mitcham AC), Jean Whitehead (London Olympiades AC) and Carole Mitchell (Mitcham AC) were in the leading group when they reached the lake. On the uphill section Muriel Rees, the Southern junior champion, took over the lead from Alison Leggett and pulled away strongly to win in 15:34, 40 yards ahead of runner-up Jacqueline Barnett (Newport) 15:43. Third place went to Alison Leggett and she was closely followed by Shirley Dayer (London Olympiades AC).
