The eighteenth Youth's English Cross-Country Championship took place at Coldham's Common, Cambridge. The course was three miles in length and comprised one large lap.
A marshall vacated his post and the leading six runners went off course but only for 15 yards. In the confusion Philip Romaine (Spalding & District AC) took advantage and went into the lead gaining 30-40 yards on the lead pack. Romaine ran away from the pack to win by 150 yards in 17:44. Tony Cox (Luton Hare & Hounds) was second with Tom O'Reilly (Small Heath Harriers) third.
