Western Park in Leicester hosted the seventeenth Junior English Cross-Country Championships. Changing accommodation was in New Parks Boys and Girls Schools and the Lord Mayor of Leicester, Constance Jackson started the runners off on their 6-mile journey.
Peter Yates (Windsor & Eton AC) and John Hammond (Coventry Godiva Harriers) battled it out at the front of the field and at the halfway mark the led the remainder of the field by 80 yards. Yates pushed on the second lap and Hammond couldn't stay with him. Yates won by 50 yards, Hammond held on for silver with D Walker (Worcester Harriers) bronze.
