The thirty-second Women's National Cross-Country Championship took place at Bury, Lancashire and local club Bury & Radcliffe AC helped with the organisation of the event.
Northern champion Madeline Ibbotson (Longwood Harriers) was hoping to retain her title in the individual event as were Mitcham AC in the team title race.
On the day the weather was cold and windy. After the starter had sent the runners on their way Georgina Buchanan (Western AC) was the first to show. Buchanan was later overhauled by Ibbotson and Southern champion Pam Davies (Selsonia Ladies AC). About 2½ miles into the race Ibbotson put in a surge to leave Davies trailing.
Ibbotson eventually crossed the line in 19:43, Davies was runner up 12 seconds behind with Brenda Bailey third.
