The twenty-second Youth's National Cross-Country Championships took place under blue skies at the Royal Norfolk Agricultural Society Showgrounds, Norwich.

At the mile marker Dave Williams (Woodford Green AC) led the field, shortly after this Tony Simmons (Luton United AC) took the initiative with Ian Stewart (Birchfield Harriers), Williams and John Bednarski (Swindon AC) in close attendance. Southern champion Dave Bedford (Shaftesbury Harriers) made a slow start and started moving through the field but was unable to catch the leading two. Simmons grabbed the win in 14:28, five seconds ahead of Stewart with Bedford third.

The team results were delayed after one of the funnels were not properly sealed off and discs were distributed to the wrong runners. The final results were based on the recorder's sheet. Waterloo Harriers beat Windsor & Eton AC by 15 points with bronze medals going to Mitcham AC.
