Witton Park in Blackburn, Lancashire hosted the Intermediate Women's National Cross-Country Championships. Mary Sonner was the pre-race favourite and the defending champion. Three-quarters of a mile into the race the leading group included Rose Murphy (Bathgate AC), Christine Tranter (Farnworth Harriers) and a trio of runners from Watford Harriers namely Rose Cullen, Mary Sonner and Sandra Marquis. Christine Tranter was first to arrive at the main hill, chased by Rose Murphy, Mary Sonner, Rose Cullen and Sandra Marquis, as the runners tackled the incline Mary Sonner made her break and with just over half a mile to run Sonner led from Angela Holt (Bromsgrove & Redditch AC), who had made her way through the chasing pack. Mary Sonner held off a strong challenge from Angela Holt on the run in to win by 10 yards in 16:09. Rose Murphy, the Scottish intermediate champion, came home in third place.
