The twenty-fifth English Junior Cross-Country Championships took place at Sutton Park in Sutton Coldfield. The course consisted of two large laps of three miles plus the start and finish straights making a total of 6 miles and 400 yards.
David Black (Small Heath Harriers), Ray Smedley (Birmingham University AC) and Julian Goater (Shaftesbury Harriers) were in the leading group after the first lap. One mile into the second lap Black surged ahead. As the conditions deteriorated the runners found themselves in a blizzard. Black made light of the challenge from the weather and ran out a winner by 32 seconds in 30:43. Smedley grabbed the runners-up spot with Julian Goater in third nearly a minute behind the winner.
