Stopsley Common in Luton hosted the twenty-eighth Junior English National Cross-Country Championships.
Steve Ovett (Brighton & Hove AC) opened up a 50-yard gap ahead of Paul Kenney (Leicester Coritanian AC) towards the end of the first lap. At the four-mile mark Ovett was 100 yards clear of Kenney and Kevin Steere (Cambridge & Coleridge AC), next up was Mike Deegan (Birmingham University AC) and Northern and 1974 Youth champion Mike Longthorn (Birmingham University AC), these four were followed by Stephen Emson (Tipton Harriers), Ray Crabb (Swindon AC) and Richard Callan (Leicester Coritanian AC).
Ovett went on to win by 200 yards from Kenney with Crabb third.
Steve Ovett told Athletics Weekly: "I'm really enjoying distance running."
