Stopsley Common in Luton hosted the thirtieth Youth's English National Cross-Country Championships.
Nicky Lees (Derby & County AC) was swiftly to the fore followed by Nat Muir (Shettleston Harriers). At the mile mark the leading group consisted of John Mills (Gateshead Harriers), Muir, Jeremy Lothian (Torbay AAC), Lees and Mark Bateman (Blackburn Harriers & AC). Nigel Martin (Bracknell AC) reached the leaders during the next mile, and it was Martin, Mills and Muir who went on to fight for the individual honours. Mills fell with half a mile to go, and Muir took the lead. In a barnstorming finish Mills got home with 40 yards to spare from Muir with Martin third.
