The thirty-second Youth's English National Cross-Country Championships took place at Parliament Hill Fields in London and was sponsored by the Provisional Insurance Company Ltd. The championships attracted a record number of entrants (607 starters for the Youth's race), the weather was fine and the going firm.
Northern champion Mick Morton (Blackburn Harriers) took the lead one mile into the four-mile race. At the end of the first lap of 1¼ miles Morton had a 40-metre lead over Tim Redman (Leamington C & AC). Morton continued to build on his lead and ran out winner in 22:25. 35 seconds behind was Alan Cummings (Cardiff AC) in second with Andrew Wilton (Staffordshire Moorlands AC) third.
