The Intermediate Women's National Cross-Country Championships took place in New Town Park, Runcorn, this was the first time the 'National' had been run in Cheshire. The testing course consisted of one small lap and one large lap and was 4300 metres in length and consisted of fast grassland stretches and heavy mud.
At the end of the small lap (800m), Pauline Clark (Sale Harriers) had quickly shown to the fore with Sandra Arthurton (Leeds City AC) and Linda King (Basingstoke AC) following and the chasing group were some 30 metres adrift. On the large lap Sandra Arthurton pushed ahead and built up a lead of 80 metres over Linda King winning in 14:18. King grabbed second with Karen Timson (Thurrock Harriers) third.
