Parliament Hill Fields in Hampstead Heath, London hosted the thirty-fourth English Junior Men's Cross-Country Championships sponsored by Provincial Insurance Company Limited. The course consisted of two large laps and was 6 miles in length.


Before the end of the first lap Northern champion John Doherty (Leeds City AC) led Geoff Turnbull (Gateshead Harriers) by 40 metres with David Lewis (Rossendale AC) third. By the end of the lap Turnbull had withdrawn and Doherty's lead was 60 metres over Lewis. This pair were followed Graham Smith (Sunderland Harriers & AC), Chris Robison (Royal Naval AC (South)) and Rob Shorrock (Blackburn Harriers). With one mile of the race to go Doherty was 80 metres clear from Smith, Robison and Lewis. Doherty won in 31:33 with Smith grabbing runner-up spot ahead of Robison.


The team award went to Rossendale AC who beat Leicester Coritanian AC by 26 points with Warrington AC third.
