The thirty-fifth English Junior Men's Cross-Country Championships sponsored by Provincial Insurance Company Limited was held at Roundhay Park, Leeds. The course consisted of two large laps and was 6 miles in length.
After two miles Steve Harris (Shaftesbury Harriers) and the previous year's Youth winner Jon Richards (Duchy of Cornwall AC) led the field. The chasing group consisted of Craig Mochrie (Leicester Coritanian AC), Peter Tootell (Stretford AC), Phil Dixon (Rossendale AC), Darren Pemberton and Neil Appleby both Birchfield Harriers. At the end of the first lap, Harris had established a 10-metre lead and quickly increased the lead to 40 metres as the second lap progressed, Southern winner Richards was second with Eddie Herridge (Aldershot, Farnham & District AC) moving into third. As the runners passed the lake with one mile to go, Harris was 60 metres clear of Richards. Harris maintained the gap to win in 29:42, 15 seconds clear of runner-up Richards with Herridge third.
