The Intermediate Women's National Cross-Country Championships took place at Warwick Racecourse. The course consisted of one short and two long laps. 2807 entries had been received for the event with 461 for the intermediate race.
Carol Haigh (Holmfirth Harriers) got off to a fast start and after the first lap had a lead of 10 metres over Elise Lyon (Wycombe Phoenix), Lucy Ramwell (Sale Harriers), Jacqui Beasley (Berry Hill Mansfield AC), Samantha Thomas (Longwood Harriers), Julie Holland (Manchester Harriers), Melissa Smith (Halifax Harriers), Michelle Lavercombe (Exeter Harriers), Diane Edwards (Sale Harriers) and Helen Appleby (Andover AC). Over the next half mile Ramwell closed the gap and at the start of the last lap Ramwell had edged in front with Ramwell and Haigh having a 50-metre lead on Thomas and Smith. As Ramwell forged ahead Haigh had no answer, and the individual title went to Ramwell with Haigh second. Thomas got the better of Smith in the last kilometre to take third.
Lucy Ramwell told Athletics Weekly her win was "a big surprise".
