The thirty-eighth Youth's English National Cross-Country Championships took place on Stopsley Common, Luton with hundreds of clubs taking part and the race again sponsored by Provincial Insurance Company Limited. The two-lap course of fast parkland was estimated to be short of the published four miles.
Northern champion Paul Taylor (Copeland AC) went to the front early in the race and was pursued by Gary Horne (Stockport Harriers), Karl Palmer (Highgate Harriers), David Miles (Gosforth Harriers) and Mark Cole (Liverpool Harriers). Early into the second lap Paul Riley (Liverpool Pembroke Harriers) caught Taylor but as the lap unfolded Taylor began to move away from Riley. Palmer then drew level with Riley with Miles in fourth. Palmer began to struggle and Richard Findlow (Airedale & Spen Valley AC) joined the battle for the medals. Taylor won 19:47, Riley's surge at the finish brought him silver with Findlow earning bronze.
