The Intermediate Women's National Cross-Country Championships took place at Knebworth Park, Knebworth in Hertfordshire. 357 entries were received for the intermediate women's race. The event was sponsored by Provincial Insurance Limited.
After 1km had been covered Lucy Ramwell (Sale Harriers), Jacqui Beasley (Berry Hill), Samantha Thomas (Longwood Harriers), Bridget Smyth (Phoenix AC), Wendy Wright (Derby & County AC) and Helen Appleby (Andover AC) were announced as the leading group, when 2km had been reached Beasley, Ramwell and Smyth were 40 metres clear of Thomas.
By the time 3 km had been reached Smyth was 13 seconds ahead of Ramwell with Beasley in third. Bridget Smyth went on to win by 21 seconds from defending champion Lucy Ramwell with Samatha Thomas overhauling Jacqui Beasley for third.
