The forty-first Youth's English Cross-Country Championships took place at Town Moor in Newcastle, this was the first time Newcastle had hosted the race, Provincial Insurance continued their support of the event.
From the outset Darren Mead (Thetford AC) went to the front of the field. Phil Gladwin (Wolverhampton & Bilston AC) and Paul Daly (Bracknell AC) were Mead's closest rivals after the two-mile point had been reached and 25 metres further adrift were Jonathan Dennis (Camberley & District AC), Southern champion Julian Gentry (Newham & Essex Beagles AC), Martin Amor (Copeland AC), Robert West (Chester-le-Street & District AC), Rob Denmark (Basildon AAC) and Jason Lobo (Blackburn Harriers). The inclines on the main circuit settled the finishing order with Mead winning Gladwin drifted back as Daly grabbed second and Dennis coming through for third.
