The Intermediate Women's National Cross-Country Championships took place at Roundhay Park in Leeds. Provincial Insurance Limited sponsored the event and the race was over a course of 4,375 metres. Leeds City AC assisted with organising the event.
Early leaders in the race were Sharon Willicombe and Louise Watson both GEC Avionics and Andrea Whitcombe (Parkside AC), 15 metres further back was Julie Adkins (Tonbridge AC) with Liz Hammill (Liverpool Harriers) and Maxine Newman (Leicester Coritanian AC) also in contention.
On the second lap Adkins moved up to second with Whitcombe leading and Willicombe close up. The driving rain made the conditions tough, but Adkin ploughed on and ran in a winner by 7 seconds from Willicombe who had overtaken Whitcombe to take second by a five second margin.
