The forty-third annual English Youth's Cross-Country Championship took place at Newark and Notts Showground in Newark, Nottinghamshire. The race had been run on the showground in 1984 and was sponsored by Provincial Insurance Company Ltd.
From the outset Malcolm Campbell (Winchester & District AC) and Jon Brown (Hallamshire Harriers) battled for supremacy and they were quickly clear of the chasing pack. At the midpoint of the race Brown made his break and opened up a 20-metre lead. Brown wnet on to win in 22:27, 18 seconds clear of runner-up Campbell with John Maycock (Rockingham AC) third.
Brown told Athletics Weekly: "I knew Malcolm was going to go out really hard so I intended to stay in there as long as I could. I followed him through the mud, but I expected him to go there, so I pushed it along the top and I got away, I think I underestimated how much distance I had left so I just ran hell for leather the rest of the way!"
