Senneleys Park in Bartley Green, Birmingham hosted the Intermediate Women's National Cross-Country Championships. The 200-acre park contains large expanses of short mown grass and woodland and is criss crossed by three streams. Provincial Insurance Limited sponsored the event and the race attracted a record number of entries.
Louise Watson (GEC Avionics) led a group around the first small loop including Jenny Clague (Liverpool Harriers), Gillian Stacey (Bromley Ladies AC), Tracy Mayock (Leicester Coritanian AC), Adele Rankin (Oldham & Royton Harriers), and Nicky Ashe (Borough of Hounslow AC), the atrocious conditions began to impact the leaders and Watson and Stacey found themselves challenging for the lead. Stacey made the first move but said "I dropped back because I felt I needed to take it a bit easier as there was a long way to go." Watson then took the lead and steadily pulled away to win with Stacey second Ruth Ellway (Leicester Coritanian AC) passed Adele Rankin to take third.
Winner Louise Watson told Athletics Weekly "I got more and more confident, I didn't mind the conditions because with me being light, I seem to be able to skip over most things."
