The Girl's National Cross-Country Championships sponsored by Provincial Insurance Limited took place at Arrowe Park, Birkenhead. Wirral Athletic Club assisted with the hosting of the event. A shuttle service of buses conveyed competitors from Woodchurch Leisure Centre, the event headquarters, to and from the park.
Midland champion Helen Curnock (Yate & District AC) led from Southern champion Melanie Hance and Elinor Mayne (both Bedford & County AC). Louise Powell (Blackburn Harriers) was faster over the muddy section towards the finish and took the title by two seconds from Curnock with Louise Ireland (Rowntree's AC) third.
