The forty-fifth English Junior Men's National Cross-Country Championships took place at the Newark and Notts Showground in Newark. This was the third time the race had been held at these showgrounds after visits in 1984 and 1988. This was the last race under the auspices of the ECCU and the English Cross-Country Association would look after cross-country for the men and women going forward. The race was run for the first time in seventeen years without a major sponsor. The six-mile course was completely flat and around a disused airfield and consisted of two large laps plus the start and finish straights.
Defending champion Andrew Pearson (Longwood Harriers) battled with Keith Cullen (Chelmsford AC) in the first part of the race but by half-way Pearson had established a lead and went on to win convincingly from Jon Gascoyne (Harlow AC) with Cullen fading to third.
Pearson told Athletics Weekly: "I knew he was running well so I pushed it from the start."
