The forty-seventh English Youth's National Cross-Country Championships took place at the Newark and Notts Showground in Newark. This was the third time the race had been held at these showgrounds after visits in 1984 and 1988. This was the last race under the auspices of the ECCU and the English Cross-Country Association would look after cross-country for the men and women going forward. The race was run for the first time in seventeen years without a major sponsor. The four-mile course was completely flat and around a disused airfield and consisted of one small lap and one large lap plus the start and finish straights.
Mark Steinle (Blackheath Harriers) was in the leading group from the start of the race, after two kilometres Steinle made a break. By the half-way point Steinle's lead was 50 metres with his closest rivals being Matthew Laffar (Havant AC), Ian Bowden (Pudsey & Bramley AC) and Steven Smith (Newbury AC). Steinle went on to win by five seconds in 21:21 with Laffar second and Bowden third.
Steinle told Athletics Weekly: "The others were looking around and then they slowed a bit so I decided to go."
