The Junior Women's National Cross-Country Championships took place on Stopsley Common, Luton. The course was 4,500 metres and consisted of one small lap and one large lap plus the start and finish straights. 524 entries were received for the race.
16-year-old Sharon Murphy (Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers) led at the halfway stage with Liz Talbot (Bedford & County AC) on her shoulder. Murphy pulled away over the last lap to win by 7 seconds in 17:56. Murphy's clubmate, Julie Mackay beat Nicola Slater (Radcliffe Harriers) to second place by the slimmest of margins. Mackay, also 16 years old, past four in the final 100 metres as the wind took its toll.

Murphy told Athletics Weekly: "It was not easy at all. The hills were quite hard. And the wind made it all even harder because everyone was tucking in behind me until I finally got away on the last set of hills. I thought I was going to get a stitch on the second lap but it went away and I just tried to keep going to the end."
