The Junior Women's National Cross-Country Championships took place at Newark. The course was 5km in length and described as fast and flat. Reebok sponsored the event.
Northern champion Amanda Tremble (North Shields Polytechnic) was the early leader followed by Birhan Dagne and Getenesh Tamirat both Essex Ladies AC, Beverley Gray (Cambridge University Hare & Hounds), Anne Connolly (Skyrac AC) and Midland champion Josie Grey (Birchfield Harriers). On the gradual hill up to the wood, Tremble, Dagne and Tamirat went 100 metres clear. Going round the farmer's artichoke field, Tremble stuck with Dagne. With one kilometre of the race to go Dagne had established a 15-metre lead with Tremble battling bravely to stay in touch. Tremble was unable to close the gap and Dagne won by 6 seconds in 19:19, Getenesh Tamirat picked up the bronze medal.
