The English National Cross-Country took place at Temple Newsam in Leeds. This was the fifty-seventh running of the junior men's race and was sponsored by Saucony. This was the first time the 1500-acre park had hosted the National. The 9km course consisted of farmland and parkland and included a few hills.
Midland champion Tom Humphries (Cannock & Stafford AC) set the early pace but was caught by Northern title holder Phil McGlory (Liverpool Harriers) after five minutes. At the halfway point, McGlory led by 25 metres from Humphries, with Sam Jacobs (Ipswich Harriers), Keith Gerrard (Manx Harriers) and Tom Sharland (Ipswich Harriers) 50 metres further back. McGlory ran out winner with Humphries second and Sharland third.
