Herrington Country Park in Sunderland hosted English National Cross-Country Championships. The park was built on the site of a former colliery and is located adjacent to Penshaw Monument. This was the sixtieth running of the junior men's race and the sponsors were Saucony. The course was 10km in length.
Kevin Deighton (Bridlington Road Runners) held off a strong challenge from Tom Russell (Stroud & District AC) to win by a few yards. Local runner Nick Swinburn (Morpeth Harriers) picked up the bronze medal.
Deighton told Athletics Weekly: "I've been determined to peak for the National all winter."
