Herrington Country Park in Sunderland hosted English National Cross-Country Championships. The park was built on the site of a former colliery and is located adjacent to Penshaw Monument. This was the sixty-second running of the youth's race and the sponsors were Saucony. The course was 6km in length.

David Forrester (St Helens Sutton AC) went to the front early in the contest and continued to extend his lead throughout the race winning in 20:38 despite a fall. Nine seconds adrift of Forrester was Greg Divall (Royal Sutton Coldfield AC) with Jonathan Brownlee (Bradford Grammar School) a further five seconds behind.

When talking about his fall to Athletics Weekly Forrester said: "I got straight back up and it didn't affect me too much."

Aldershot, Farnham & District AC and Warrington AC tied on 125 points in the team event, with the title going to Aldershot based on the higher placing of their fourth counter. Bronze medals were picked up by Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers.
