The English Cross-Country Championships moved to a more central venue that was more popular with the runners as entries were up on the previous year. The venue chosen to host the sixty-third running of the youth's race was Alton Towers Theme Park in Staffordshire. The route was on parkland adjacent to the park and the length of the course was 6 km.
Dan Clorley (Luton AC) surged past Ross Murray (Gateshead Harriers) in the last 200 metres to win the J L Wagstaff Trophy for the individual winner. Third place went to Ronnie Sparke (Woodford Green & Essex Ladies).
Clorley told Athletics Weekly: "When I was going up the big hill I thought I could catch up, so I went for it, this is my biggest win by far. I thought if I ran well then I might get in the top five."
