Roundhay Park in Leeds hosted the Junior Women's National Cross-Country Championships. The Park covers over 700 acres of rolling parkland with lakes and woodlands. The race was sponsored by Saucony.
Coming up to Hill 60 for the final time for runners were still in contention namely Joanne Harvey (Exeter Harriers), Kate Avery (Shildon Running & AC), Hannah Walker (Dacorum & Tring AC) and Naomi Taschimowitz (Taunton AC). Harvey triumphed by six seconds over Avery with Walker third and Taschimowitz fourth, only 10 seconds covering the first four.
Joanne Harvey told Athletics Weekly: "I tried to get away going down the steep hill with 2km to go and felt good coming up Hill 60. The worst bit was the mud just before the finish - I thought I'd really slowed." Kate Avery, who was giving away two years to Harvey, said: "With 100 metres to go my legs had completely gone and there was all that heavy mud to get through. I was just happy to finish. I was actually hoping Joanne was too old for this, but it's okay, I trust her!"
