The sixty-third Junior Men's English National Cross-Country Championships were held at Roundhay Park in Leeds. The course had not been used for 12 years after repairs were required to the Victorian drainage system.
Nick Goolab (Belgrave Harriers) and James Wilkinson (Leeds City AC) battled over much of the course until the closing stages were Goolab showed his strength to win by 17 seconds. Wilkinson held on for second with Ben Norris (Notts. AC) finishing third.
Goolab said: "I was all set to give up the sport and then Steve [Steve Sharp his coach] decided to take me on out of the goodness of his heart. He hasn't got any coaching qualifications, but it's not rocket science and he's absolutely brilliant - I owe it all to him really. The race was harder than last year, but I was determined to go out with a bang."
