The sixty-sixth Junior Men's English National Cross-Country Championships took place at Herrington Park, Sunderland. This was the second time that the former colliery had hosted the race after a visit in 2007.
The course was covered in snow and this made the course both wet and muddy.
Ian Bailey (Aldershot, Farnham & District AC) broke from the pack at the beginning of the final lap to finish 25 seconds clear of Michael Callegari (Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers). Northern champion and favourite for the race Weynay Ghebresilasie (Sunderland Harriers & AC) finished in third place.
Bailey told Athletics Weekly: "I'm over the moon. I didn't feel much under pressure as everyone expected Ghebresilasie to win. I thought if I could just stay in contention then I knew these conditions would suit me. I used my strength really well to kick on and get the victory. I'm so happy with the way it went."
