The sixty-seventh Junior Men's English National Cross-Country Championships were staged at Wollaton Park, Nottingham. The venue had been used many times for the inter-counties, but this was the first time for the 'National'. Saucony sponsored the event.
Alex Short (Chelmsford AC) did most of the running in the early stages of the race however, it was a battle between Weynay Ghebresilasie (Birchfield Harriers) and Jonathan Davies (Reading AC) that captured the crowd's attention. Coming into the finishing straight Ghebresilasie led but he was overhauled by Davies in the last 100 metres. Third place went to Douglas Musson (Notts. AC).
Davies told Athletics Weekly: "I felt terrible the whole race. The first lap I was falling off the group and I had to slap myself to concentrate. I just knew if I stayed it contact, I knew I had good track speed and I'd give it everything in the home straight and it paid off."
