The Under 17 Women's English National Cross-Country Championships were staged at Wollaton Park, Nottingham. The venue had been used many times for the inter-counties, but this was the first time for the 'National'.
After the first lap Bobby Clay (Invicta East Kent AC) led Lydia Turner (Birtley AC) and Harriet Knowles-Jones (Warrington AC) and this trio were 100 metres clear of the chasing pack. Clay was slightly ahead of Turner going up the last hill but Turner got away to win by four seconds with Knowles-Jones was third.
Turner told Paul Halford at Athletics Weekly "I tried not to go too fast at the start and conserve energy a bit. And I felt really strong at the end so I thought I'm not going to let her go here. I'm going to try to sprint. Even on the fi rst lap she gained a lead of about 10 metres and I thought I'd try to keep the distance."
