Perry Park, Perry Barr in Birmingham hosted the twentieth Women's A.A.A. National Cross-Country Championships. The race had to be moved from Great Barr due to confusion with the men's race.
Because of illness 1950 winner Avery Gibson (North Shields Polytechnic Club) was unable to run, Ilford AC had a strong team out to defend the team championship.
Ann Oliver (Gosforth Harriers), the National Junior Champion, led at the half distance, Phyllis Green (Ilford AC) being happy to sit in, there was a long gap back to the remaining opposition. Within sight of the finish, Phyllis Green sprinted for the line and edged out Ann Oliver by two seconds crossing the line in 15:16. Mary Nusser (Birchfield Harriers), the Midland champion, picked up third place.
