The thirteenth Youth's English Cross-Country Championship took place at Arrowe Park, Birkenhead. The 3-mile course was a lap of the park and started and finished in front of the pavilion. A R Patten (Shaftesbury Harriers) was the initial front-runner with D Simms (Bedford & County AC) second and I Brotherton (Evesham AA & SC) third. The main body of runners steadily pulled them back and at the halfway stage northern champion Maurice Harrop (Halifax Harriers) took the lead and went on to win in 16:58. Southern winner Bill Cornell (Chelmsford AC) came through strongly for second place but left his effort too late to catch Harrop. Third place went to H Bunyan (Stevenage Harriers & AC).
