The twenty-second Junior's English Cross-Country Championships took place at Parliament Hill Fields, London. The muddy course consisted of two laps and covered six miles.
At the two-mile mark Andy Holden (Preston Harriers), Tony Simmons (Luton United AC) and Dave Bedford (Shaftesbury Harriers) led the field. Thirty yards further back was John Bednarski (Swindon AC), then came Malcolm Thomas (Thames Valley Harriers) with Don Faircloth (Croydon Harriers) sixth. Going into the second lap Holden led Bedford by 40 yards with Simmons third. This was t be the final finishing positions at Bedford, the previous year's youth champion was unable to catch Holden.
Andy Holden told John Lusardi at Athletics Weekly after the race that he wasn't able to make as decisive a break as he had hoped because "It was so heavy that I couldn't get going."
