The twenty-ninth Youth's English National Cross-Country Championships took place in Graves Park, Sheffield. The course was ankle deep in mud in places but also had some fast stretches and the snow melted and the course had some steep inclines and long gradual declines and was four miles with one small lap and one large lap.
After the first lap Ian Ray (Salisbury & District AC) led with Deryck Morris (Bristol Athletic Club), Garry Barr (Thurrock Harriers) and Stephen Emson (Tipton Harriers) in close attendance. As the field moved into the large lap, Mike Longthorn (Bradford Grammar School) surged to the head of the field and was 3 yards clear of Ray, Andrew Hitchen (Wakefield Harriers), Glenn Forster (Sunderland Harriers) and Midland champion Richard Callan (Leicester Coritanian AC). A mile later Longthorn had increased his lead and went on to win by 15 yards from Callan with Ian Ray third.
